Japanese garden at Cal State Long Beach. The word "koi" comes from Japanese. The original Japanese word koi simply means "carp," including both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. Nishikigoi is a more specific term for the ornamental carp. Koi can also mean "love" or "true love".
