This is a very beautiful Japanese garden which is located on the campus of the California State University Long Beach. The garden, on 1.3 acres, is dedicated in April 1981. The garden was designed by a Long Beach landscape architect Edward Lovell. Mr. Lovell visited and studied similar gardens in Japan and in the United States before desinging this garden. At the dedication to the garden, Lovell commented, " The garden will mellow in about 30 years. What we are doing is creating something of beauty and value for people we will perhaps never meet."

The tile-roofed entrance, which was made in Japan, provides a first glimpse of the lake, the waterfall and the arched bridge, all framed by the bonsai-shaped black pine. The lake is really the focal point of this strolling-type garden. There are hundreds of colorful koi fishes swimming happily around the lake. The water is so clear that you can see koi fishes clearly and up-closed, especially when you feed them. The koi fishes in this garden are the most beautiful fishes that I'd ever seen in the US. |
