Hostas, herbaceous perennials, are shade loving, easy to grow, low maintenance plants. Hostas were named in honor of a German doctor, Nicolaus Host. Before being named Hosta the plant was known as Funkia, also named to honor a German doctor, Heinrich Christian Funck.
