| Mango (Mangifera indica L.) in Maui, Hawaii , 2005. The mango is native to southern Asia, especially Burma and eastern India. It spread early on to Malaya, eastern Asia and eastern Africa. Mangos were introduced to California (Santa Barbara) in 1880. The name of the fruit comes from the Tamil word mangaai, or the Malayalam word manga, and popularised by the Portuguese after their Indian exploration, hence the word 'manga' in Portuguese.
