Most of flowers in this page are orchids. In general, orchids are tropical flowers, but there are many orchids originated from temperate climate and very cold hardy. However all of cold hardy orchids are terrestrial. In Missouri (USDA zone 4-5), there are 36 species in 17 genera of terestrial orchids. Most orchids in this page are hybrids which had been crossed between species or genera by human beings.

The other flowers in this page are peonies. Peonies had been grown in China for more than 2500 years, but they came to the West only two to three centuries ago. There are two major groups: herbaceous and tree peonies. All peonies in this page are herbaceous which die back to the ground during winter.
